(For English please scroll down) A Life That Goes Upstream 7979 Guide & Care · Written by Liu Yoke Jeng You Le comes from a single-parent family, his father is a hawker without a steady income. Like other hawkers, he has to start his work early in the morning and finishes late at night, and he almost has no time for his son as he is so tired at the end of the day that he cannot help his son with his homework. 10 years old You Le slowly became addicted to mobile games, and his grades dropped drastically.
When the school discovered You Le had problems with his studies, they referred him to the 7979 Companionship Class of Seremban Gospel Chapel. Pr. Phang Chui Cum and volunteers quickly made arrangements to visit You Le when they came to know of his condition. They hope to get more first-hand information about the boy. In their conversation, they found out that You Le’s father was under tremendous pressure due to their financial difficulties. He hoped he could do more for his son’s education and well-being, but he was unable to do so. Hence, he carried with him the worries of his son’s future. After that visitation, You Le’s father decided to send him to the Companionship Class. Every time You Le came to Companionship Class after school, he would ask this question, “What homework do I have for today?”. This question always blew the teacher’s mind away, he seemed to be out of the world all the time, like a soulless walking body. He couldn’t remember any homework assigned by the teachers or what the teacher taught that day. When people asked him about his studies, he would show a perplexed expression, he might be able to answer only 1 out of 10 questions. Fortunately, his classmate also attended the same Companionship Class, he would assist and remind You Le of their homework. Henceforth, this greatly reduced the teacher’s burden on checking his homework, instead, they could spend more time ensuring he could catch up academically. You Le is being rejected by his classmates and reprimanded by his teachers because of his poor grades. As a result, he lost his confidence in his studies and was afraid to seek help from his friends. Slowly, he felt reluctant to attend the interest class which was held every Saturday. The Companionship Class teachers’ hearts ached when they saw that. But, they did not give up on helping him, instead patiently taught him how to focus in class, how to note down homework and how to make friends. After one year of hard work, You Le has improved from someone who could not hand in homework on time, to being able to discuss homework with friends and complete it. Now, he feels very happy, for he can complete all his homework, and even understand the lessons the teacher taught in class. He sometimes showed outstanding performances that gained praise from teachers. Companionship Class teachers witness his growth and improvements - he is no longer afraid to interact with his classmates, willing to participate in all sorts of activities, and looking forward to attending Companionship Class every day. Currently, You Le is in his secondary years. He has achieved satisfying results in his last year exam, where he managed to get first place in his class. You Le’s growth and transformation makes the Companionship Class teachers proud. He came from a lack of self-confidence and disliked going to school, to a confident and optimistic student who takes initiative to complete his homework and do his revision enthusiastically. Tears appeared at the corners of the eyes of teachers and friends as they were touched and comforted by You Le’s transformation. You Le’s positive growth is not possible without 7979 Underprivileged Companionship Class day after day of company and support. The Companionship Class did not only relieve some burden of his father’s financial burden, it also allowed him to focus on his work, while providing You Le with a good learning environment that ensure him a brighter future.
