When the Companionship Class ended, a thin man with dark tan skin and a greasy kitchen smell stood outside the door waiting for his son, Jun Xian (pseudonym). “I don’t want him to grow up to be like me, I don’t know anything, I can only be the kitchen helper.” The moment he saw Jun Xian walking towards him, determination showed in his eyes, and deciding to send Jun Xian to the Companionship Class was the right thing he did. He hoped to provide a better learning opportunity for Jun Xian, so that he would have more choices, whether to study or work, in pursuit of a better life.
An expection out of loveBehind this expectation is a family with financial difficulties. The father works relentlessly at a restaurant for the family. Whenever he is back at home, he reminds Jun Xian to complete his school homework according to the teacher’s requirements. However, the busyness of life left him with no time to attend to his child's schoolwork. Besides, the mother is a foreigner, whose language, way of life and culture are utterly different from a Malaysian; she could not help, even though she wanted to.
One day, the father heard about the Companionship Class from a nearby traditional coffee shop. The Companionship Class was opened by 7979 Holistic Care Station of True Light Baptist Church, to enable a child to grow healthily by providing homework guidance, character shaping and other services to children of underprivileged families. Therefore, the father immediately took action to register his son in the Companionship Class. Unfortunately, the class was full, but he did not give up; he quickly enrolled his son in the subsequent year. He finally felt a sense of relief when he managed to get a place for his son in the Companionship Class. Since then, the father would send Jun Xian to the Companionship Class no matter how busy he is. Jun Xian’s parents believe education can provide their child a better life, so they continue to support him through actions, for they are unable to guide him with his homework. he changed out of expectationDuring the early days in the Companionship Class, Jun Xian would sit quietly at his place doing his homework. Teacher Teh Bee Lin was the main teacher who taught him, and found that Jun Xian was a bright boy; he could achieve good results if he persevered in his study, even in subjects that he was not good at, such as Mathematics, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, the teacher believed that he has the ability to overcome challenges. “When I taught him Mandarin, which was the most difficult subject for him, I used graphics to attract his attention and to stir up his potential.” To increase Jun Xian’s learning effectiveness, Teacher Bee Lin uses things that are of interest to Jun Xian in her teaching style. He never rejects teachers’ teaching styles. Day after day, the teacher found that he had improved greatly in his studies. Everyone thought that he would remain as such. However, when he entered Standard 3, his behaviour and attitude started to change …
“Do you have any homework, today? Do you have spelling?” Jun Xian would answer with a firm “no”, expressionless every week. A few weeks passed by, and the frequency of “no” increased. Teacher Bee Lin noticed the abnormality. Normally, school would have given the children weekly spelling test, but it did not appear in his homework record (it is an exercise book for the students to record all homework). Furthermore, the school informed his father that he did not complete his homework. Teacher Bee Lin was shocked to find that Jun Xian, who seemed to be an obedient and bright boy, was telling lies to cover up about homework. This discovery struck her hard; she felt like a heavy stone was placed on her chest, and nothing could describe the heaviness in her heart. “Jun Xian's biggest problem was that he liked to tell lies, he liked to hide his homework.” Dealing with these headache issues, Teacher Bee Lin knew she could not take his bad behaviours lightly, and they must be corrected timely. She purposefully reminded Jun Xian’s father to keep a watch on him, made sure he finished his homework and in the evening, revised his next day's spelling test. The father was very cooperative, and he did everything according to the teacher’s instructions. He took the effort to set aside some time to watch his son complete his homework. On the other hand, the Companionship Class’s Supervisor, Teacher Lim Bee Hoon, also intervened; she worked closely with the primary school class teacher of Jun Xian. The class teacher would snap Jun Xian’s unfinished homework and send it to the Companionship Class teacher in charge as a record for follow-up and supervision. In order to let him understand the seriousness of his actions, Teacher Bee Hoon also warned Jun Xian that if he continued to hide his homework, they would bring this to the attention of the Assistant Principal. Since then, Jun Xian began to realise the consequences of his unbecoming behaviour, and he gradually decreased the practice of “hiding his homework.” Whenever he reached the Companionship Class, he would take out his homework and study his spelling test attentively. Teacher Bee Lin was comforted by his changing attitude. She believes that as long as Jun Xian is willing to be corrected and learn relentlessly, he will have a promising future 陪读班下课之际,一名消瘦、黝黑、带着油烟味的父亲,在门外等待俊贤(化名)走出教室。“我不希望他像我这样,什么都不懂,只能当厨房助理。”望着俊贤走向他的那一刻,他的眼神愈发坚定,确信送孩子来陪读班是正确的选择。他期盼为俊贤提供更好的学习机会,将来有更多的选择,无论是升学或就业,以过上更好的生活。
一份期待,一份爱这份期待背后,是一个经济不宽裕的家庭。父亲在餐馆日复一日的忙碌,努力帮家庭维持生计。回到家后,他只能按照学校老师的吩咐,提醒俊贤需要完成的功课;奈何生活忙碌,使他无暇顾及孩子的课业。而母亲是外籍人士,语言及生活文化与马来西亚有所差异。对于孩子的课业,她纵然有心,却无力协助。
某日,父亲在传统咖啡店得知,临近的真光浸信教会7979全人关怀站设立了陪读班,即为经济弱势家庭的孩子提供课业辅导、品格栽培和其它服务等,帮助孩子健康成长。于是,父亲马上为孩子申请进入陪读班学习。虽当时已满额,但他不放弃,翌年继续为孩子申请。终于,他成功争取到了陪读名额,顺利地送孩子来陪读班。那一刻,他的心中松了一口气。自此,父亲无论再忙,都坚持送俊贤来陪读班。父母亲虽然不懂得在课业上督导孩子,但他们用行动默默地支持,相信教育能为孩子提供更好的未来。 意料之外,他变了初来陪读班,俊贤在位置上安安静静地写着功课。主要陪读他的郑美玲老师发现,俊贤是位聪明的孩子,只要坚持不懈地学习,他可以在课业上获得不错的成绩。即使面对不拿手的科目,例如数学、国文和华文,老师相信他有突破难关的潜能。“对于他比较差的华文,我用图案吸引他的注意力,从而激发他的学习兴趣。”美玲老师会把俊贤的兴趣,融入陪读教学,进而提升学习果效。对于老师指导的方式,他从不辩护。日子久了,老师发现俊贤的课业表现进步神速。原以为,俊贤在陪读班能持续有很好的表现,直到他升上三年级,他的行为表现开始出现变化......
“今天学校有功课吗?有听写吗?” “没有” 每一周,俊贤都神色自如回答老师。 随着这回答的次数增加,持续几个星期。美玲老师开始察觉这不寻常的现象。照理而言,学校每个星期都安排听写测验,可是家课(学校记录功课的本子)里却从未出现相关的记录。不仅如此,俊贤的父亲也透露,校方告知俊贤并未完成学校功课。美玲老师才惊然发现看似乖巧、聪慧的俊贤,居然用谎言和其它小伎俩来掩饰课业的真实情况,企图瞒天过海。当下,她很震惊,仿佛有块大石重重地砸在心头,难以言喻。 “俊贤有一个最大的问题,他很喜欢骗老师,喜欢藏功课”。面对眼前令人头疼的情况,美玲明白她绝对不能轻视,必须及时纠正他不良的态度。她特别叮嘱俊贤的父亲每天晚上一定要督促孩子要完成功课、复习第二天的听写测验。父亲配合地跟随老师的指示,特别抽出时间,每日督导孩子的课业。而陪读班负责人——林美云老师也介入,与俊贤学校的班主任携手合作:由学校老师用手机拍下俊贤没完成的功课,并发给陪读班作为记录与监督课业进度。美云老师也警告俊贤,若他有所隐瞒,她将把俊贤藏功课的事,如实告诉副校长,让他了解事情的严重性。 自此,俊贤意识自己的不良行为将会带来严重的后果,他逐渐减少出现“藏功课”的行为。到陪读班,也如实拿出当日的功课,以及认真复习听写测验。美玲老师看见俊贤改变的态度,感到欣慰。只要他愿意改善不良行为、坚持不懈地学习,美玲老师相信,他的未来依然充满无限可能。 Comments are closed.
