Even with generators, pumping water proved difficult as most wells were filled with muddy runoff. In response, volunteers launched an urgent water relief effort over the past few days—gathering water donations and purchasing water from any available source. Eventually, they managed to secure a large truckload of drinking water, which was used not only for cooking at temporary shelters, but also distributed to power line repair crews, hospital patients, and disaster survivors sleeping on the streets.
