Cina、Kg. Lumatai 、Kg.

Weathering the Storm Together: 7979 Stands with Sabah

Picture
Picture
On June 30, 2024, a flash flood caused by heavy rain hit Sabah, resulting in flooding in several areas, affected areas are Inanam of Kota Kinabalu, Menggatal, Tuaran to Donggongon, and most severely in Penampang. The flood's range was extensive, with water levels exceeding waist height. Many homes and vehicles were submerged, causing significant losses to the flood victims. On July 1, 7979 launched its disaster response plan, setting up an Incident Command System (ICS) Team, preparing cleaning equipment and supplies, recruiting volunteers, collecting disaster data, and establishing base operations—all of which proceeded swiftly. By July 2, the water had receded, hence power and water supply were gradually restored to some affected areas. Help requests began to pour in, and volunteers prepared to assist in the disaster zones.

Disaster Response Timeline:

Picture
July 3: The operation base was set up at the BCCM Penampang, where volunteers helped clean homes, churches, and kindergartens.
July 4: The operation base moved closer to the disaster area to the Penampang Grace Chapel to improve the efficiency of cleaning efforts.

July 5: With the help of an organization known as SPECS, church members, volunteers, political groups and fire department worked together to clean up the affected areas.
July 6: Maranatha Church became the new operation base. Piling up rubbish from damaged furniture was a serious problem. 7979 arranged for industrial waste bins at the base to facilitate garbage collection.

July 8: The cleaning work was 80% completed. Six overseas short-term mission team members from 7979 Holistic Care Station of Tanjung Aru Calvary Charismatic Centre Kota Kinabalu joined as volunteers, helping with the cleaning and placing of damaged furniture into the RORO bins. In addition to cleaning, volunteers with electrical repairing skills checked household sockets for faults, as flood-damaged electrical appliances could pose risks like electrical leakage and short circuits. One volunteer, an electrician, assisted with this task.
July 9: The focus of disaster response shifted to inspecting electrical appliances and sockets in affected households.
July 11: Disinfection work was carried out in the disaster zones, and after completion, the operation base was evacuated.

August 3: To assist children in coping with various emotional complications caused by the flood, 7979, in collaboration with Maranatha Church, Tabika Kemas Kg Inobong, the Sabah Methodist Church Relief and Disaster Response Team, and the Malaysia Agape Counselling Centre Malaysia (KK Branch), organized a children event for children aged 5 to 12 (divided into preschool and elementary school groups) known as "Rainbow After the Rain". The event featured fun games, singing and dancing, disaster prevention education, group counseling, and magic performances. The program included group counseling sessions, giving children the opportunity to share their feelings and experiences before and after the disaster.
"Remember to thank every teacher (volunteer) for me. I'm going home now!"
A child reminded a volunteer with a big smile before heading home.
Postscript of "Rainbow After the Rain" Children's Event
On the day of the "Rainbow After the Rain" event, a volunteer noticed a group of children playing near the venue and invited them to join the event. A simple invitation created an opportunity to serve the children. The children were initially shy and reserved during the activity. A while later during the event, the volunteer learned that they were stateless children living nearby. A week later, 7979 staff received a call from a volunteer of Penampang Grace Chapel, expressing the desire to visit the children. The staff quickly contacted local church and organization leaders and visited the children on August 13. The group hoped that this connection would not only help address the needs of these families but also provide timely assistance.

Voices from Volunteers

It was such a joyful thing         Fanny (Penampang Grace Chapel)

Picture
I’m so glad I could participate in this flood cleaning operation. I was truly shocked when I saw those yellow mud covered homes when I entered the disaster area for the first time. If I had to clean an entire house by myself, it would be incredibly exhausting. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to contribute to the disaster relief effort and help those in need. Although my body was tired, seeing the volunteers working quietly to clean the site made me feel happy. If I were in their shoes, facing the same issue, I would hope that others would help share the workload. It is truly a joyful thing.

I learned how to clean homes
Joel Voo (Penampang Grace Chapel)

Picture
Thanks to Pastor Eleven’s invitation to join this 7979 initiated disaster relief operation, I have learned how to clean a home more thoroughly and how to use cleaning tools such as the high-pressure water gun and wheelbarrow. Due to certain reasons, I wasn’t able to participate in the entire cleaning operation, but I really miss the days of working together with the volunteers and teachers. With their company, I was able to happily and quickly help disaster victims tidy up their homes. The most memorable part of this disaster relief was working together with everyone to dig out large amounts of mud from the drains. I also saw many cute cats there and couldn’t help but wonder: how did they survive the disaster?

The resilience and courage of the disaster victims are even more precious
Percy (Sabah Methodist Church Relief and Disaster Response Team)

My first experience participating in the post-flood relief efforts organized by 7979 Holistic Care & Relief Network made me deeply understand the responsibility of being a helper and the significance of volunteer service. As a volunteer coordinator, I was responsible for coordinating the work of various volunteer teams to ensure smooth execution. Additionally, working with 7979 taught me a lot about how to respond to disasters efficiently and comprehensively. They not only focused on the timely provision of materials but also cared deeply about the psychological well-being of disaster victims, and provided volunteers with ample training and care to ensure everyone received support both mentally and physically.

Expressing Love Beyond Words
Fionalisa Evelin Aldrin

From July 9 to 10, I had the opportunity to participate in post-flood relief work in the Penampang district. This relief operation, initiated by 7979, aimed to help disaster victims by cleaning mud, garbage, and removing furniture damaged by the flood. I was one of the few Indigenous volunteers, but the Chinese volunteers did not overlook me. I sensed the spirit of mutual tolerance and acceptance in them. Seeing the diligence of every staff member and volunteer, I understood the importance of love and action. Christians can express love beyond words to disaster victims through disaster relief activities, offering practical help.

conclusion

Picture
Nearly 100 volunteers from different regions, professions, and denominations were recruited for the relief efforts before and after the flood. Everyone worked together, regardless of background, to help in cleaning the homes of the victims, hoping they could quickly return to their normal routine. 7979 also expressed gratitude for the support and cooperation from various churches, organizations, businesses, and caring individuals, which enabled the disaster response to be carried out swiftly and smoothly in the affected zones.

This flood came quickly and receded just as fast, but it caused irreparable damage and harm to the victims. They said the severity of the flood was beyond their expectations. As a result, they faced the disaster unprepared, which made their response seem rushed and chaotic. Moreover, the flood served as a loud wake-up call to the local churches and organizations, urging them to gear up in disaster prevention and to be ready in advance. The current disaster response work has come to a pause, but that does not mean it is completely over. Whether it is institutions, teams, or individuals, everyone should prepare thoroughly for the next disaster by acquiring knowledge in disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as receiving related training.

Picture
Picture

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture

那是一件多么幸福的事   Fanny(兵南邦恩惠堂)

Picture

Picture

Percy(沙巴卫理救援赈灾事工)

FIONALISA EVELIN ALDRIN

Picture
