Picking Up Washed Ashore Starfish
Kepong Abundant Grace AG – Interview Journal
Written by Hoi Xin
A flat at a corner of Kuala Lumpur, the stain mottled marks on the walls reflected how old the building is. Clothes hanging on the window sway with the win, dogs sleep deeply at the corners. All these are so contradict to the bustling city not far away. Year 1992, Kepong Abundant Grace AG moved into this place. From the pastor to every lay believer, this church believes and embraced the vision of “Church must be built within the community”. In this place where the urban poor gather, the existence of church is like streams in the desert to underprivileged families.

Once in a month, these flat residents will receive gospel tracts that handed out by Pr. Joshua. He will lead his church members to go house to house and distribute gospel tracts; many times they don’t receive any respond. They will slip the it into the mail box or door steps and they pray along the way. When someone opens the door, they will ask politely, “Do you need any help?” This is how the church gains opportunity to engage with individuals or families.

Picture
ǀ Because Jesus loves you
Pr. Joshua had been asked few times already by the people whom he helped, “Why do you help me?” “Because Jesus loves you.” From this simple conversation, we can see the love for God and people manifested in the life of Pr. Joshua. He said: “This is a huge plan, our church is trying to create a sense of belonging of the community to the church.” He deeply believes that one day, people in this community will find it natural to walk into the church and seek God’s help. He explained, even though he is serving this community, but the influences can spread further, when the aid recipients accepted church assistance, they usually cannot resist the urge to share with others about how the church had helped them. Therefore, as long as all churches can faithfully minister to the flocks around them, it will reflect a picture of unity in Christ.

Pr. Joshua shared honestly, from intervening one family to community transformation is like picking up washed ashore starfishes and put them back to the sea, it may seems foolish, but it is necessary. He give thanks to God, in the past some aid recipients strongly believed in fate, but under the church constant company, they do not only accepted Jesus into their lives, their family members and neighbours also witnessed the changes in them, and people began to get curious about the church.

Pr. Joshua shared a secret of how to develop strong relationship with aid recipient. i.e. care for others without any condition. He believes that the priority should be to fulfill their needs first; in the process of working with them, they will slowly come to know the church, and put down their guard. Be it phone calls, house visitation or accompanying them, it is all opportunities for the church to testify. Pr. Joshua usually will straight forwardly asks the aid recipients what is their needs, undeniably, this act shows that we respect aid recipients as a helper. He emphasized that dealing cases is a spiritual warfare which we must start with prayer, serve people with wisdom from Holy Spirit, and end with a prayer by handing over everything back into God’s hand.
ǀ Promoting Community Care Projects
At the moment, the church uses “Underprivileged Children Companionship Class” program as a means to engage with majority of the aid recipients. Companionship Class is a long term program, it provides ready platform for the church to give homework guidance and life coaching systematically to the children, thus enable us to enter into every family. The children are naïve and innocent, they trusted our Companionship Class teachers, they will shared with teachers whatever things that happened at home. The teachers will lead the children to pray accordingly, or pray together with the team of Companionship Class. Sometimes they will use resources such as 7979 Crisis Families Intervention Assistance fund or other resources to ease off some families from sudden crisis. The person in charge of Companionship Class ministry is Pr. Joshua’s wife, Sis. Liew. Their youngest daughter is also in the ministry team.

Pr. Joshua said that the church planned to install a notice board at the door in front of the church, announcing to the community seminars or activities available. In the past, the church organised seminars on Financial Planning and Children Sex Education. In future, the church hopes that she can organise some health talks on illnesses such as glaucoma or diabetes, and provide health screening, to help the community to be better in sickness prevention, and to be able tackle the health issues before it become worse. He smilingly added, those people who became aid recipients had turned into his volunteers, they treasured every opportunity in helping others. From an aid recipient turned into a person who empowered others, is the most comforting thing to the helpers.

ǀ Integration of Social Resources
For the benefit of the community, Pr. Joshua do not only invites professionals from all walks of life to speak, he also liaise with welfare department, 448 Food Bank depending on the needs of aid recipients. He also involves in hospital visitation, evangelistic ministry and provides job opportunities to people in order to help aid recipients to be able to be independent and walk out of their problems.
ǀ This is Commandment, not a Multiple Choice Question
Pr. Joshua always remind his church members that participating in community services is beneficial to their spiritual lives, Church cannot be inward-looking, we should serve the people according to the burden and spiritual gifts we have. Some believers shared that when they saw the aid recipient started to stand up and served others, they felt deeply encouraged and decided to get involved in loving the community ministries too.

“The integration of social services and gospel ministries is a good channel for the church to enter into a community.” Pr. Joshua hopes that in future, there will be more churches joining 7979 Relief and Services Network. He prayed that God will raises up more churches that have burden for their community, by faith they will live out the teaching of loving God and man. As for man power or resources, Pr. Joshua believes that God will provide, this is his many years of experience.

Looking at the stain mottled marks walls of this flat, the author hopes that the gospel seeds that spread to every household will quickly sprout.

Picture

The starfish on the beach

Urban poor, is like the starfish washed up on the beach, helplessly hold on to their last breath. The starfish doesn’t afraid of massive waves, but being washed up on to the shore. Neither is our aid recipient, they are not afraid of working hard to support their family, but they are worried when crisis hit, nobody is around to help. Church is like the man who picked up those washed up starfish, we should treat each of them with care, extend our helping hands, then threw them back to the deep sea, let their lives go on.

From Companionship Class to Family Care
A story from our Crisis Family Intervention Assistance Program
Written by Aaron Yu
Mdm. Yap, an 80+ year old lady, had been staying for many years at a flat nearby our church, together with a divorced son, two granddaughters, and her youngest son who are still single. Thus, Mdm. Yap still needs to bear the responsibility of educating the two granddaughters who are 10 and 11 years old. As she herself was not highly-educated, so she is not able to help them on their homework. She also can’t afford to pay for their tuition fees. Hence, she has been worried about their education, yet she can’t do anything. She lives on her savings, money from her eldest son and remittance from her daughter, who works oversea.

How our relationship began? It all began from Companionship Class. Last year, AOG Church Kepong which located nearby to Mdm. Yap’s house decided to start Companionship Class. One of our church’s elderly sister, a friend of Mdm. Yap, spoke to her regarding our Companion Class, as she always sees the two girls wondering around after school and not doing their homework. When Mdm. Yap found out that this is a free class, she enrolled both girls willingly. She felt so happy that she finally found a way to help them with their study and they had really improved. Not only that, she also send both of them to our Sunday School which falls on every Saturday.

Picture
Unfortunately, it only lasted for few months, the Companionship Class was forced to close down due to MCO. However, our PIC of Companionship Class, still cared and showed concern to all the children. She called them up one by one and tried to understand their situation. Only then, she found out that there is no internet facility at home, so the two girls were unable to attend their school’s online classes. She found out further that the family’s financial status was badly hit by MCO. Her eldest son had lost his job, her daughter’s job also affected, thus unable to remit money back regularly. They were in deep financial problem, until there is no food to place on the table. Mdm. Yap said, “I might not be very rich, but I also do charity works (e.g. donation) whenever I can. Who knows, now I need other people to help me.”

When the church came to know of Mdm. Yap’s situation, they immediately helped her to apply for 7979 Crisis Family Intervention Fund’s aid. It was so timely, it helped them to get over the most difficult time. Now MCO is over, her son returned to work and the daughter (mother of the two girls) was able to buy a mobile phone and internet facilities for her daughters’ online classes, also cover their education and meal cost. At the same time, the Companionship Class also resume operation.

Mdm. Yap is very grateful to the church, for helping her at the most needed time. Now she has stable income, no longer needs help. She is also very grateful for teachers of Companionship Class who show love and care to her two granddaughters’ lives and studies, teachers of Sunday School for their teaching on the Word of God that had shaped their character. As a result of these, the two girls who are growing in a family background of divorce parents and cross generation parenting, had experienced tremendous improvement in their studies and maturity in their character. Mdm. Yap always feel thankful and relief whenever she thought of this.

Picture

A Family of Four Strong
A story from 7979 Crisis Family Intervention Assistance Program
Written by Aaron Yu
In a wooden house of a squatter area at North Jinjang, Kepong, stay a family of four. The mother Siew Hua (pseudonym) works as a temporary worker in a restaurant. Father is a construction worker with unstable income, he works only when his boss assigned job to him. Their 20 years old daughter Xiao Mei (pseudonym) inherited their family weak kidney illness, started dialysis since 15 years old, as she has to do dialysis on every Wednesday, therefore she can’t take up normal job. Their youngest son can’t work too, for he has an impaired sole, thus he can’t stays standing for too long. This family earn their living by taking up some petty jobs that can do at home. They barely survive by meager income.

Year 2020, when COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, our country is one of it. In March, in order to curb the widespread of COVID-19, our government declared MCO. As a result of this, Mdm. Siew Hua and her husband’s income are affected, they can’t work as usual, their life immediately in predicament. At the same time, the hospital that their daughter usually go for dialysis is no longer available, she had been transferred to another hospital which is further away from their house, the increase of transportation cost has worsens the already bad financial condition.

Before MCO, a neighbor introduced their daughter to a church nearby which is Abundant Grace Kepong AG. After the church loving care, repeated visitations and invitation to church, she became acquainted and close to some church members and the wife of the church’s pastor. During this period of time, the church discovered their predicament through caring telephone calls, thus the church helped them to apply for aid from 7979 Crisis Family Intervention Fund, which is a sum of RM300 a month that will be given for 4 months. This aid is like rain in the desert, lighten their heavy financial burden, it helped them to withstand the crisis of financial double blow.

Picture
On my way to visit this family, when I parked my car and walked to their house, I was a bit worried how should I encourage and comfort this people who are obviously in trouble, but when I saw the smiles on their faces while sharing the process of how the church cares and helped for them, which included applying for money aid from 7979 Crisis Family Intervention Assistance. Other than that, the church continue to supply food and sundry to this family. Although, their daughter had returned to the nearer hospital for dialysis treatment, and a relative had offered to help in transportation. the father’s work is still not stable. Moreover, Siew Hua’s leg is now suffering from water retention, thus she is unable to work, as she has to stay home to take care of her kidney failure daughter, and this had withheld her from receiving leg treatment. The future for this family is still very challenging and difficult, however they had choose to face it with an optimistic and thankful attitude. With the church continuous cares and encouragement, this strong family of four deeply felt the warm of their company.

Picture

Colour as light as water
7979 Loves to Help People
written by Rainy
Picture
When I was little, teacher used to request us to bring colour pencils to school for colouring exercise purposes or art class. As my family operates sundry shop. Hence, I could easily take a box of 12 colour pencils to school. Maybe the supplier gave extra colour pencils, we used to have a lot of loose and extra green or light blue colour pencils, it could be more than 10 sticks.

In school, I envied when I see my classmates had 24 or 36 sticks of different colours in a box, I felt so envy. No wonder, they always got A or A+ for their art, I only managed to get C or sometimes B-. The little me always thought: “Maybe I can’t do better because I only have limited colours”. Many years later, from TV ads, I saw a new brand of colour pencils, where after applying colours to the picture, you only need to use a water brush to sprinkle on it, then the parrot in the picture looks real and flew out of the art paper.

One day during my uni. years, together with my friends we enthusiastically started drawing. My friend rode a motorcycle to a nearby sundry shop, he bought a book of art paper and a box of 12 water colours. Fortunately, we can mixed the water colours to get more colours. Few hours later, I drew a painting of a waterfall, my friends drew sun flower, beaches or architecture. We pasted our paintings on the wall at the staircase. So for those few days, whoever that comes to our house, we will asked them to choose the painting they liked the most. Just as expected, no one was interested in my waterfall painting, I was not puzzled about it, as I understood no one admires a still waterfall.

I had always been like this, not so particular about colours, I always prefer simple and safe colour matching for my clothing, in terms of food, people usually go for food that looks good other than taste and smell good, but in my case, I can still enjoy my cooking that turned out to be a disaster. Finally school over and I became a member of the working class, I thought my battle with colours is over, I didn’t expected that I need to prepare PowerPoint presentation and design posters. Computer has all shades of colours, I can no longer use the excuse that I run out of colour pencils. Maybe I have to admit, that other than short sighted, I might be colour blind too.

That day, when my colleague and I were chatting about colours. She said that some people are like white paper when they come to a new place, slowly colours are added onto the paper by people around them, gradually the new comer will integrate into his or her new environment, and became one of them. Some came with strong subjective experiences, like a coloured paper, the person would like to integrate into the new environment. But, these people is making it difficult for others to paint onto their paper, in the end they usually will choose to leave with a complicated coloured paper.

Later, I have the opportunities to reach out to many different cases. They all come in different backgrounds and characters, they produced unique colours on the drawing palette, they drew their own painting, and produced many different pictures. When their lives is in predicament, they are so heavy laden until they don’t know how to paint anymore, the intervention of volunteers became very crucial. If we rush in and quickly add bright colours onto the art paper, just hoping to lessen the effect of dark gloomy colours, then we as volunteers are only painting our own desire painting or lives.

Water, is a transparent liquid that is colourless and tasteless. Volunteers just have to be the water, do not carry any colour or taste (value or prejudice), slip into the artist palette of every cases and blend with the original colour and fix it. Water, is also a moisturiser and a lubrication, that can revive lives for them to continue living; or overcome obstacles that used to block them in the past leaving no marks behind.

For volunteering services, we have an ethical ground: “Volunteers should not force onto an aid recipient any of their own behaviour or belief.” Meaning that we cannot force an aid recipient to live according to our way, insist to put our desire colour into others drawing palette.

Let us be the people helper who is transparent like water.

Picture

Let's Go & Save
Develop New Caring Norms
written by Pr. Pysong

COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc on our economy, hitting particularly hard on the labour force. According to national statistical report, unemployment rate in January 2021 recorded a high of 4.9%, representing 800,000 are out of jobs. Government had predicted that, with gradual recovery of economy and progressive vaccination rates, unemployment will drop to 4% by end of the year. However, such numbers can never described the immeasurable sufferings of many underprivileged families. Government has allowed withdrawal of EPF savings, for those whose income have been significantly affected by the pandemic , tapping into their retirement funds in order to survive!

Churches helped those affected by pandemic to apply for 7979 Family Crisis Intervention Assistance Fund, as they have either lost their jobs or their income reduced significantly, thus unable to meet even basic day to day expenses, medical or children educational expenses etc. With the surge of pandemic, MCO which was implemented have brought about various degree of social impacts on different communities. Aiming to curb the spread of pandemic on one hand, while ensuring livelihoods of people are not grossly affected. However, for the underprivileged families, the impact of pandemic, that has lasted more than a year, is devastating. Some even said; “they may starve to death, instead of die of sickness.” The poor are caught in both dire situations.

Thankfully, there are still many people with compassion. Seeing families and children in need, there is still kindness in our society where many are willing to extend help. Judging from present pandemic situation, earliest recovery may be within 2 to 3 years, hence, accepting and adjusting to co-exist with Covid virus shall be a new norm for our generation. More creative caring approaches shall be the normalcy for new generations. Although the various SOP can restrict our movements, but our care and love shall continue to flow in the communities.

ǀ How to develop new caring norms?
1. Do Good Anytime and Anywhere
The Bible said: “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them”. To “do good and display kindness” anytime, anywhere, one must foremost be prepared with, extra cash in the wallet, extra umbrella in the car, various charitable services hotline numbers are saved in the mobile. Never let “unpreparedness” be an excuse for failing to do good and display kindness.

2. Scheduled and Planned Donation
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” To cultivate a heart of compassion, one has to start with habit of giving. Committing to a pledge of fixed sum at scheduled time. Irrespective of the amount pledged, this is a good habit to be cultivated. Once you developed a habit of regular donations, you’ll begin to care, and you’ll also desire to contribute your other resources besides money.

3. Searching for Your Calling and Destiny
“That the man of God may be completed, equipped for every good work.” If this pandemic has triggered you to ponder upon life’s destiny, this could be the time for you to consider, how to let God use your talents, resources and spiritual gifts that He has bestowed upon you, to bless your communities. Things that touched you most, is where God calls you. Hurry, use your mortal life in exchange for eternal treasures.

This year, there have been a significant increase in the number of applications for various assistance programs under 7979, looking at the trend, it will certainly exceed our budget. May I invite you to join us as partner, by contributing your energy, resources and money to transform our communities?
