Subsequently, Abundant Grace Assembly Of God joined 7979 Holistic Care Relief Network and set up 7979 Holistic Care Station. The church launched “7979 Underprivileged Children Companionship Class” first, and set up Companionship Class to provide homework guidance to children of economically underprivileged families. In addition, the church assisted those families that were facing crises to apply for Crisis Intervention Fund’s aid, solving their immediate needs during COVID-19 pandemic.
A sister told me the origin of the name “Kepong Central Garden''. It is known as “Central Garden”, because it is connected with three areas and they are: Jinjang New Village, Kepong Baru and Segambut.” Upon reaching Kepong Central Garden, the first thing appears before you will be blocks after blocks of 30 year old flats battered by age and weather. There are more than 1000 units of houses here, its residents are mainly middle class and below. The opposite of these flats are shoplots, you can find many sundry shops in just one row of shops, this is to meet the demands of the residents here. In this row of shops, you will be able to notice a very obvious orange and white coloured bunting set beside a church’s door. On the top right corner of the bunting, you will find a logo of “Manna Food Bank'', which is one of the programmes that we have in 7979. Through giving away Manna Food Bags, we provide food aids and company to the poor and underprivileged. This bunting is to welcome the needy to walk-in and register. The bunting is being placed at Abundant Grace Assembly Of God, which has been around for 31 years. All these years the church has shown great concern and care for the local residents and underprivileged. They had organised various community care activities in the past, such as helping the needy to apply for food aid from other organisations, held special events such as free blood test campaign and Mid-Autumn Lantern Celebration. Church and Community are Interrelated
“The church and the community are interrelated, the existence of a church in a particular community is to provide assistance in every area for the community.” Rev. Joshua Tang of Abundant Grace Assembly Of God expressed that he takes community care ministry very seriously. Rev, Joshua Tang and his wife Sis. Loh moved into this community about 4 years ago, they noticed the blocks of flats opposite the church. They chose to observe first while trying to understand the living condition of the local residents. Later, they realised that the church cannot approach the people just by the church’s present community care ministry, they need to find another approach. While Rev. and Mrs. Loh are standing outside the walls of concrete, they are actually thinking of ways to penetrate into those concrete walls, so that they can care for the poor and the needy.
Enter into the Flats and Serve In 2022, 7979 gathered a few churches in the vicinity to form Klang Valley Manna Food Bank Distribution Point at Gereja Christian Grace Kepong. Its purpose is to provide Manna Food Bags to the 7979 Holistic Care Stations nearby. Henceforth, Abundant Grace Assembly Of God no longer needs to travel far to pick up Manna Food Bags, this change had greatly reduced the workload of the church in picking up allocated resources. From then on, the volunteers will pick up Manna Food Bags from Distribution Point once in two months. The following day will be the delivery day. The church’s volunteers, irrespective of age and gender, would gather together to deliver the bag printed with “Manna Food Bank” to the flats at the opposite, handed over the food bags personally to the aid recipients. In 2023, considering the inconvenience of some elderly aid recipients, the church decided to add in a new service, that is doorstep delivery, with the intention to do a glucose and blood test for them. With this doorstep service, the underprivileged families will be more concern for their own health condition, while our volunteers would have the opportunity to engage conversation and get to know them more. On some occasions, the volunteer would do the glucose test for other family members as well and sometimes the neighbour too. Sis. Liew told us there was one aid recipient who initially was not interested with our free blood test activity, but after the volunteer’s doorstep delivery service, she became willing to attend all our blood test activities, because now she has become more health conscious.
Felt the Warmth Within the Walls of Concrete
“I feel very relieved, the neighbours can bear witness to what we have been doing here for all these years because we provide personal service.” Abundant Grace Assembly Of God ex-coworker, Ying (pseudonym) shared. She has years of experience serving among the local residents, managed to build good rapport with the people, while being the reliable helper in promoting community care in church. She believes door step delivery of Manna Food Bag's main objective is to build good relationships with aid recipients. Henceforth, whenever Ying delivered Manna Food Bags to those aid recipients, she did not only hand over food bags, she would also talk to them, and listen to their cries. By delivering Manna Food Bags, Ying and the volunteers often felt the warmth deriving from the changes in the lives of aid recipients and the gratitude shown to the church. We have come to realise that serving others is not limited to only sharing love with others, but we felt the love and warmth too. The church does not only care for the underprivileged in the community, they also do not want to see this ministry diminish at the hands of younger groups of Christians. They hope to train more young volunteers who are passionate in community care. Therefore, after each Sunday service, the church would encourage the youth to stay behind and participate in the Manna Food Bags delivery.
There was one youth by the name of Jessica, during July’s Manna Food Bags delivery day, she familiarly performed the task of measuring blood pressure and tallied the items in the food bag. Jessica, was actually an introvert, she can hardly engage conversation with people, she always forced herself when it comes to community service. However, in order to help the needy, she is willing to change herself, and communicate with the aid recipient. She said: “Through delivering Manna Food Bags, I am able to see there are plenty of people who are in need and struggling for a living. If I can contribute something to society, I see that as a blessing. ” Jessica hopes that although the Youth can do very little, imitation, they still can contribute to the society.
The works done by Abundant Grace Assembly Of God in the community gradually gained the affirmation of the local residents, this can be seen by the increase in referral cases given to the church. Whenever, the church walks around carrying Manna Food Bags, the shop owners or neighbours would acknowledge that the church is doing something good, and sometimes, they would support the good work by giving “love tokens” to the church. “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.” Luke 6:21 Hope that more people living at the opposite flats will be satisfied in body, heart and spirit. CLICK HERE FOR ENGLISH VERSION
The HISTEAM 7979 Holistic Care Station of Kepong Abundant Grace Assembly of God and Taman Pusat Kepong both have a history of more than 30 years. Over the years, the Church has made a contribution to the community by organizing various public welfare activities to serve local residents. The church also conducts free blood tests, provides residents with free services, and teaches them to value good health.
Sister Jing (pseudonym) and her husband, Brother Cheng, are old and live in an old flat opposite the church. The children live outside, and one son moved to a nearby residence after marriage. Daily expenses, mainly rely on Brother Cheng scavenging and selling to make a living. Every morning he goes out to scavenge and returns at 5:00 in the afternoon; The money earned from scavenging is mainly paid for the monthly housing maintenance fees and utilities, and after deducting these expenses, the couple have to scrimp and save. Sister Jing goes out to pack food every day, their children occasionally take them out for meals. She tried to apply to the government for assistance benefits, but was not approved. Such a day is not easy, plus children are rarely by her side, Sister Jing is still strong enough to survive. One day in June, we sat at Sister Jing’s home and interviewed her. Sister Jing got up, went to the room, took out the "7979 Manna food bank" case receipt slips which tied tightly with rubber bands, and then spread out these receipt slips and showed them to us. Our co-worker, Mrs. Liu Yaling and we were surprised and moved. We did not expect that she treasured every case receipt slip from the Manna Food Bank and thanked the church for sending her a Manna food packet every two months! Sister Jing expressed to me the joy of her collection of receipt slips. These receipt slips contain a lot of warmth, which warms my heart. It turned out that she cherished every contribution the church gave to her.
In fact, Sister Jing has been in contact with the Care Station for a long time, and she also knows that the church held free blood tests. But as she is old, and it is difficult for her to go up and down the stairs, she is absent from the blood test. Volunteers are always concerned about her recent situation. In 2022, the church applied for 7979 Manna Food packets for nearby vulnerable families, and Sister Jing was one of the beneficiaries. The Manna Food packets prepared by 7979 consider Sister Jing's physical needs, and prepare food and other daily necessities that are beneficial to her health, in order for Sister Jing and Brother Cheng to get adequate and nutritious food.
This year, the church began to provide home service for cases with mobility problems, and the first service target was Sister Jing. The church arranged for a team of four people to come to the house and, in addition to handing out food packets, also measured Sister Jing's weight, blood pressure and blood sugar. After that, the volunteers count the contents of the food packets: daily supplies and food, to ensure that the complete items are provided, and explain the contents and uses of the food packets to Sister Jing, for example, teach her to use shampoo. Since Sister Jing got the 7979 Manna Food packets, she is willing to go to the church. Every Sunday she attends church and the church gives her a special place according to her needs. On June 18, the church held a free blood test, and she came. A Manna Food packet and a small act of volunteer door-to-door service made Sister Jing willing to change herself and go out of the house. She deeply felt the dedication and love of the volunteers, so here she comes. CLICK HERE FOR ENGLISH VERSION
Mr. David Tang (pseudonym) and his wife are foreign citizens, they have one son and one daughter. For some reasons, they left their home country and moved to Malaysia. They had been staying in Malaysia for almost 10 years.
Initially, both of them worked as a waiter and waitress at a restaurant. It was not a smooth sailing hence it led them into a financial crisis. In addition, with their children being born one after another, the increasing demands for baby formula and diapers had added more burden to the family. Year 2022, Mr. David Tang and his family moved to the flats at Kepong Central Garden. They noticed that there were some beautiful pictures displayed at one of the shops opposite their flats. Although, they do not understand Chinese language, but from the English wordings they knew that this is a Chinese church, i.e. One of the 7979 Holistic Care Stations - Abundant Grace Assembly of God, which is placed in Kepong. Consequently, Mr. David walked into the church and got to know Rev. Joshua Tang and his wife Sis. Loh. When the church became aware of the condition of Mr. David’s family, and considering the needs of this couple and their children, the church decided to apply for Manna Food Bank’s aid for this family to lessen their family expenses. During application, the volunteer specifically mentioned that this family needs baby formula for their daughter, the youngest child. 7979 Manna Food Bag, which comes in a big bag of essential food, supplements, daily use items and special items, such as: baby formula, can really help in lessening the family’s living cost and burden. Each time they received the Manna Food Bag, this couple would be very happy, and grateful to the church for showing concern for their family’s needs. Mr. David’s son Ah Qiang is a beneficiary of this 7979 Care Station’s Companionship Class. Although they are foreigners, yet due to the Companionship Class that he is attending uses Mandarin as the medium language, therefore, he manages to pick up some basic Chinese to communicate. Kepong Abundant Grace Assembly of God had always tried their best to serve the underprivileged in the community. The underprivileged they served, most of them are Chinese, with some other races as well. People who came from afar such as Mr. David Tang and his family are also recipients of their services. No matter what lies in the future, the church just hopes that it can accompany them as they step forward till the day they enjoy stable income.

28th July, Department of Statistic Malaysia released a series of reports, which includes latest (2022) national household incomes. On the whole, the report showed that the average household income in the year 2022 was higher compared to the year 2019. [1] The poverty line has increased from RM2,208 to RM2,589. [2]If we observe carefully the statistics of every state, then we would be able to see the obvious gap; basically, the poorer and distant states have lower income. B40 group in Klang Valley has low income. But, if this group of people were to be placed in Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia’s poorest state, they would most likely be classified under the T20 group, because in that state, there are so many more who are classified as hardcore poverty. Another figure that we should also pay attention to is the “Food Category Poverty Line Income (PLI)”, meaning that a balanced diet with sufficient nutrients and calories, would require RM1,198 for a household of 4 members. [3] This figure is actually higher than the national average and also states like Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Terengganu, Selangor and Malacca. These states spend more money on food compared to other states. I think generally everyone of us has experienced the consequences of rising living costs due to various global and domestic inflation pressure. However, the poor and underprivileged are the ones that would suffer significantly. In order to lighten the pressure of rising inflation for the poor and underprivileged group, 7979 came out with a program known as “Manna Food Bank”, hoping to mobilise church’s volunteers to provide food assistance, as well as caring and accompany the poor and underprivileged. Although the bimonthly delivery of RM200 worth of Manna Food Bag is not a lot, however the constant visitation and caring of volunteers could really comfort and encourage many stay alone elderlies, single parents and poor children. Not long ago, a church’s leader asked me: “How do we let the community get to know us?” The next door of this church is a worship place of another faith, and its downstairs is a car repair and services shop. I asked him back: “Your next door is a worship place of another faith, when do they have their service, at what time, did they hold any activities in the past?” He answered: “I’m not sure about that.” Then I asked again: “Under what circumstances will the people in this community pass by the road in front of this church?” He answered: “Maybe to repair their cars.” That was the point. Usually believers of another faith would not bother to know when is others’ services schedule, also they would not notice what kind of activities that others held too. On the other hand, if the people of the community are aware of what services it provides, then they would be willing to come to the church and enjoy available services, because those services could improve their lives. If the church has a good reputation, their good work could even spread further. In every community, there will surely be income gaps between the rich and the poor. Some are struggling to survive just to meet their livelihood needs. If the church sets their foot at this location, then the church should consider to provide various services such as, Companionship Class or Food Bank, while the church provides these services to the people, they could also share the goodness of Gospel with them. Let's move together, striving to shape a more loving society and a more beautiful country.
